HOW IT WORKS

Where your money goes

Each Karibu scholarship funds a talented young person from Tanzania to complete the three-year Diploma in Hospitality Management at Kenya Utalii College in Nairobi, which we believe is the best hospitality school in Africa. A full scholarship costs around £11,700 over three years.

What a scholarship covers

  • Tuition and college fees for all three years
  • Housing at the college and a monthly food allowance
  • Uniforms, kitchen kit, books and a laptop
  • English language classes where needed
  • Travel home during the holidays, and medical cover

Support throughout their career

Every scholar is paired with an experienced hotel manager as their mentor from their first day at college. Their mentor supports them through their studies, work placements and interviews.

Our support continues after graduation. Through our professional network, we help our scholars secure their first role and continue to support them as their careers develop.

How we select our scholars

Each year we hold a Talent Day in Pangani for young people from the town and surrounding villages, including members of the team at Pangani Cliffs Lodge.

During the day, candidates take part in practical hospitality tasks, team exercises and one-to-one interviews. This gives us the chance to get to know each person properly, far beyond what a written application could show.

The scholarship is awarded to the candidate who shows the greatest potential, drive and warmth, and who would not otherwise be able to afford the training. We only make an offer once all three years are fully funded.

Seeing the difference

Our supporters receive regular updates on each scholar’s progress, from their first term and exams to their work placements and first job. Each year we will also publish a simple summary of the money we have received and how it has been spent.

Questions

How much of my donation goes to the scholars?

Almost all of it. Karibu has no salaries and no office, and our founder and trustees give their time for free. The only other costs are small ones, such as payment fees and this website.

Why a college in Kenya?

Kenya Utalii College has trained hospitality professionals for decades, and we believe it is the best hospitality school in Africa. Our scholars deserve the best education available.

What happens if a scholar struggles?

Their mentor and the college step in early, as we would much rather support someone through a difficult term than lose them. If a scholar does leave, any unspent funds stay with the foundation for the next scholar.

Do scholars have to work for a particular hotel afterwards?

No. We help each scholar find the best possible start to their career, wherever that may be.

Do scholars pay anything back?

No. The scholarship is a gift, not a loan.
